Your Very Own App You Can Do

This is my "baby". More than a year ago, I included the idea of making an app from Google Slides in "5 Google Slides Activities You Can Do". It is a really cool idea shared by Micah Shippee, so I took my own advice and I created an app using Google Slides.

Why? I co-coordinate the 8th grade Washington, DC trip and one of the things we strive for is efficient and effective communication. I have been using our website for this for the last handful of years. It works fine, but we were receiving many emails with questions from parents about the information I already had on our site. At the same time, I see how connected we all are to our phones, so why wasn't our website serving this purpose? Would an app would be better? Would an app be a better reference point and home for our info? These questions all led me to investigating this Slides app idea. I wanted to find a way to better manage our info so it was friendlier to our parents and student travelers and therefor freeing up time for me to focus on the trip.

Why Slides? I already knew how versatile Slides can be. I can customize the size and orientation, font and colors, as well as being able to insert images and shapes. The ability to link - outside to websites, Docs, and PDFs, as well as within the deck to other slides - is impressive.... and exactly what I needed.

Interested? I hope so. As much as I'd love to show you the exact app I created for our trip (I am extremely proud of it!), I can't because I can't share all of our info. This is a bonus of using Slides! I can share it with those who need the info, rather than putting all the info on our website for the whole world to see (or an app store where anyone can download it and I'd have to figure out how make it account based). I do still maintain our website with the basics of the trip because it is a starting point.

I did duplicate our app, taking out info I can't share. [If you are on a phone or tablet, you can really experience it as an app ... but an added bonus of it being a Slide? It works on computers!] If you'd like to preview this in its app form, click here ↬ http://bit.ly/yourveryownapp . [I provide a template below you may make a copy of if you want a starting point for your own app. Feel free to use the pieces you like and get rid of what doesn't work for you or you don't like.]

Another bonus to using Slides is I can update the Slide as much/often as I want, and each time it is opened, it's the most updated version. With an app, you might have to wait until the person updates the app itself to be able to share the new info.

"Title Slide"
Where to Start? I started with the traditional blank Google Slide. I changed the page setup to a customized 8.5 x 11 inches to mimic a piece of paper. (It appears to fit phone/tablet screens nicely, but this might be an area of improvement for me in the future.)

2 *MUST HAVE* Google Apps You Can Do

Trip planning is a daunting task but Google is here to help, yet again! The focus of this article - the 3rd in a 6 part series - is how to utilize the Google Drive app and Google Calendar (also an app, but can easily be synced to your preferred calendar app).

In this article for Nations Classroom, a student tour company, I highlight how beneficial using the Google Drive & Calendar App can be for trip coordinators. Easy & regular access are at the top of my list!

But don't think they only work for trip planning!

I use Google Drive & Calendar numerous times a day & since I have them on my phone for my school work, for my home life, and for the various other activities I'm involved in. Google Calendar's allow me to manage my daughters' school activities, doctor appointments, my husband's word schedule, sporting events, and everything else!

Sheets + formMule You Can Do

I slacked off last week and didn't post. I apologize - it was our final week of school and it was a BUSY one! I've been wrapping things up and yet gearing up for some early summer PD sessions, too. I'm very excited to continue to share.

My 2nd installment article was published for NationsClassroom late afternoon on Friday. This time I focused on using Google Sheets in conjunction with the formMule add-on. If you've not checked out this add-on, it provides a way for what I like to call "mass, personalized communication". I still smile every time I send out one of these emails ... I can email as many people as I'd like and yet make it feel like I took the time to compose each one individually.

We've also found that by sending fairly regular communication we can address questions long before they can become problems. We never underestimate the power of making all our parents comfortable. (We are both moms and we'd want this for our girls, too!)

And don't think you have to be planning a trip to use formMule ... I used it ALL THE TIME in the classroom to contact all the parents on our team. It is A - MAZE - ING!

I'd love if you took a minute to read the article here and as always, feel free to contact me if you have questions &/or need help with Sheets + formMule.

Trip Planning You Can Do

Over a decade ago, a spunky 7th & 8th grade Social Studies teacher took on the daunting task of organizing and traveling with our school's 8th graders to Washington, DC. It was - & still is - a whopping success! Can you imagine taking over 150 students, roughly 30 parents, and about 20 teachers 500 miles to our nations capital?!?!

I am honored to not only call her my colleague, but also my friend! Alyssa Bruck (@AlyssaBruck) coordinated this trip for many years on her own. I began helping her about 5 years ago and together we navigate the road to DC. She and I share the same nerdy love of history and we love sharing that love with our students. A parent told me once that her son had been looking forward to this trip since his kindergarten year! That is one successful trip.

It's quite an organizational process ... and we 💖 all of it!!!! But we don't do it alone. Our good friend, Google, is there all along the way.

I'm thrilled to announce I've written a series of articles for our tour company - NationsClassroom - and the first was published yesterday! It's the first in a series of how to utilize Google Apps to improve a school trip.

I'd be honored if you took a few minutes and checked it out! This first article focuses on using Google to make the trip leaders life easier!

More to come!!! I'm also going to classify this as my #OneNewThing for this week because it's the first published article I've written.
